HISTORY of cada|casa
Cada Casa was started to offer a different form of learning for today's youth. The idea behind community education is that there is a wealth of skills and information that can be learned from ones environment. It is the role of cada|casa to facilitate such learning. Founder, Tymon Emch, has spent over a decade working with children in many forums, which has eventually led to the creation of this educator/student facilitation. Recently, Tymon spent 6 months living and working at a children's home in Cusco, Peru. While teaching English, and acting as Director of Extracurricular Activities, Tymon found that there was a disconnection between the children's perception of education and its relation to their life. A new class was created where passionate college students and US volunteers came and spoke to the group about what they do, and how education is integral. Classes included the creation of a newspaper, mock-archeology excavations, screen-printing, web-site development, musicianship, and more. It became apparent that people become great educators when assisted with curriculum development when they approach it in a passionate manner. Returning to the US, Tymon wishes to bring this idea of transforming enthusiastic, inspired members of our community into educators of new, interesting classes.
Initial classes included Bilingual Soccer, Art Movements and Techniques, and Spanish Conversation, and Math Tutoring. With support from the community, cada|casa is very excited to collaborate with the PoetHouse Art community. Together, a collection of new art classes will began in the Winter of 2010, including: Social Commentary through Slam Poetry, Stencil Graffiti, Art Movements and Techniques, Muppet/3D Design, Screen-printing / T-shirt Design, Digital Photography.
cada|casa is very proud to be an active member of the Central Oregon community. We have worked with many groups, including non-profits such as Rise Up, CAUSA, Jobs for Justice, Deschutes County Mental Health, Oregon Rush Soccer Club and our parent non-profit, PoetHouse Art. Our involvement with the youth in and around Bend includes classes with Bend High School, Tumalo Middle School, J Bar J, NorthStar, and more.
